Sleek and modern design

One of the key features of a contemporary billiard table is its sleek and modern design. These tables often have clean lines, minimalist details, and a simple colour palette. Look for tables with a streamlined frame and legs, and a playing surface that is free of ornate designs or patterns. A contemporary billiard table should be a statement piece in your game room, so choose one that fits your personal style and complements your existing decor.

High-quality materials and construction

When shopping for a contemporary billiard table, it’s important to look for high-quality materials and construction. A table made from solid wood, such as maple or oak, will be more durable and long-lasting than one made from composite materials. The table should also have a sturdy frame and legs, and the playing surface should be made from a high-quality slate material. Look for tables that come with a warranty or guarantee to ensure that you are getting a quality product.

Professional-grade playing surface

One of the most important features to look for in a contemporary billiard table is a professional-grade playing surface. This means that the table should have a slate bed, which provides a smooth and level playing surface. The slate should be at least 1 inch thick and covered with a high-quality felt material. The felt should be tightly stretched and free of any wrinkles or bumps. A professional-grade playing surface will ensure that your shots are accurate and consistent and that the table will last for many years to come.

Another feature to look for in a contemporary billiard table is customizable options. Many manufacturers offer a variety of finishes, colors, and materials to choose from, allowing you to create a table that fits your personal style and preferences. Personalizing your billiard table can make it a unique and special addition to your game room.

What design elements define a contemporary billiard table?

Contemporary billiard tables are characterized by sleek, modern designs with clean lines, minimalist details, and a simple color palette. They typically have a streamlined frame and legs, and a playing surface that is free of ornate designs or patterns, making them a statement piece in a game room.

Why is high-quality material and construction important in a contemporary billiard table?

High-quality materials and construction ensure durability and longevity. Solid woods like maple or oak, a sturdy frame and legs, and a playing surface made from quality slate material contribute to the table’s overall quality and longevity. It’s also beneficial to look for tables with a warranty or guarantee.

What constitutes a professional-grade playing surface on a contemporary billiard table?

A professional-grade playing surface is characterized by a slate bed, usually at least 1 inch thick, covered with high-quality, tightly stretched felt material. This setup provides a smooth, level, and consistent playing surface, crucial for accurate and consistent shots.

When thinking about billiard games, most people know only about the 8-ball variation. The more “advanced” players also know the 9-ball variation, but usually, that’s it. But you’d be surprised how many different games you can play on your billiard table. In this article, I’ll introduce you to some of the most fun variations that can surprise your friends and family.  I’ll also add a few additional ways to make your game room even more fun and exciting. Starting with a :

siblings playing pool

7-Ball is a variation of a 9-ball billiard with a couple of extra rules.

The game is played with balls numbered from 1 to 7. Don’t worry. You don’t need another extra rack. The diamond one — like this one — will work just fine. Just omit the last 2 balls in the long corners of the rack.

Here’s the racking setup: Ball 7 in the middle of the rack with the remaining balls around it. Ball 1 at the top of the rack.

After a break, the 2nd player will choose 3 pockets along either long rail of the table (he’ll select his “side”).

The player who broke gets the opposite side. The game’s goal is to sink the balls in raising order into one of your three pockets. The rest of the rules are just like in 9-ball.

The player who (legally) sinks 7th ball wins.

pool table

Another great variation that doesn’t require any additional accessories.

While playing 15-balls, you have a few variations to choose from.

One way is to play it just like 9-balls. You sink the balls in rising order, and the player who scores the last one wins.

But to make the game more exciting, you can play for points.

You play the game the same way (sinking balls in rising number order), but now you earn points for each score.

Balls 1-10 are worth 1 point each. Balls 11-15 are each worth 2 points.

The player who first reaches the agreed-point target wins.

So, for example, if the winner must score 100 points, you play a game, and after sinking the 15th ball, you re-rack and continue playing until someone reaches that goal.

The great thing about it is that it can be played with more than just 2 players.

To play the game, rack the balls in the following way: 15 in the middle, 1 at the apex of the rack, and balls 2 and 3 in the right and left rear corners accordingly.

You can make the game more serious by having to call all shots or keep it more casual and allow the occasional lucky shot.

blue felt pool table

Cutthroat is another great game you can play in groups of 3 to 5 people.

Each player is assigned a group of balls, and your goal is to pocket your opponents’ balls before they pocket yours.

Let’s say you’re playing with 2 other friends.

First, you determine the groups.

For example, player A gets balls numbered 1-5, player B the balls 6-10, and player C takes 11-15.

As the one who makes the 1st shot, you get to choose your group.

If you pocket an opponent’s ball, you keep shooting. If you miss or commit a foul, your turn is over.

A player with all his balls pocketed is eliminated. The winner is the player with any balls remaining on the table.

If you’re playing with a formidable opponent, you might even form a temporary alliance to beat him!

Table Tennis

Table Tennis Top

Did you know you can easily transform your billiards table into a tennis table?

All you need is a conversion top on top of your table. It’s a fantastic way to add some variation to your game room and ensure that everyone in your family can enjoy some playtime. Even if they’re not big fans of billiards.

A conversion top can be easily stored away until you need it again. And it doesn’t take half as much space as the collapsible ping-pong tables.

friends playing darts

Personally, I can’t imagine a game room without a dartboard cabinet inside it.

There’s just something about this game that instantly gives the room a bar-like atmosphere.

Like billiards, there are many ways to play darts, but the most popular one (and the one you’re probably familiar with) is the 301.

The rules are simple. Each player starts with 301 points and has to subtract points from his score by hitting numbers on the dartboard.

The goal is to reach EXACTLY 0 points (You can’t score 15 if you have 5 points left).

Each player has 3 throws per round.

Sometimes it can be tricky to keep track of the points, so make sure to get a cabinet with a blackboard included!

That wraps up the list of fun games you can play in your game room.

Plenty of games are left off this list, but the ones included will provide you and your family with hours of great playtime and fun.

So the next time you invite friends or family for a game of billiards, surprise them with something new, and see how much fun they have learning the game with you!

What is 7-Ball, and how is it different from 9-ball?

7-Ball is a variation of 9-ball played with balls numbered 1 to 7. The game involves choosing sides of the table and sinking the balls in ascending order into designated pockets, with the goal to legally sink the 7th ball.

How do you play 15-Balls, and what makes it exciting?

15-Ball’s is played by sinking balls in rising number order, either like 9-ball where the last ball wins or for points. Balls 1-10 are worth 1 point each, and balls 11-15 are worth 2 points each. The first to reach a predetermined point target wins. It can be played casually or more seriously by calling all shots.

What is the game of Cutthroat, and how many players can participate?

Cutthroat is a billiard game for 3 to 5 players where each player is assigned a group of balls (e.g., 1-5, 6-10, 11-15). The objective is to pocket opponents’ balls while keeping yours on the table. The last player with balls remaining wins.

How can a billiard table be converted for table tennis?

A billiard table can be transformed into a table tennis table by placing a conversion top on it. This add-on is easy to store and offers a great way to diversify activities in a game room.

If you are looking for a billiard table for your home, there are a few things you need to know before making your purchase. In this blog post, we will discuss the different types of billiard tables and why you need to choose the correct one for your gameroom.

We will also discuss why there are different sizes of billiard table and what the benefits are for each one. Finally, we will take a look at the different types of billiard tables used for various purposes and how you can make use of a billiard table dealer.

7 foot billiard tables:

This is the most common size for billiard tables. It is also the size that is used in most professional tournaments. The benefits of a seven-foot table are that it provides ample space for players to move around and make shots. It also allows for a wide variety of game types to be played.

Most people who buy a billiard table for their home choose a seven-foot table. They are an all-around good size and can be used for a variety of game types. If you have the space, we recommend choosing a seven-foot table.

These table are also great for beginner players as usually they start out using the 7ft tables and then once they get more experience they can move up to the larger tables.

8 foot billiard tables:

If you want to play competitively, we recommend getting an eight-foot billiard table. The majority of professional tournaments are held on this size of table. Eight-foot tables are also great for people who have limited space in their gameroom.

The benefits of an eight-foot table are that it provides a challenging playing surface for competitive players. Although it takes up more space than a seven-foot table, it’s ideal for people with designated billiard rooms.

If you are looking to get serious about billiards, we recommend choosing an eight-foot table.

9 foot billiard tables:

Being the biggest in size, these tables are best used in billiard halls and pool rooms. They are also the most expensive type of billiard table.

The benefits of a nine-foot table are that it provides a much bigger, and complex gaming area. These tables are require significant maintenance to stay in prime condition for competitive games.

If you’re a seasoned player looking for a billiard table to challenge your skills, we recommend choosing a nine-foot table. However, keep in mind that these tables are not for beginners.

In Conclusion

Now that you know the different types of billiard tables, it’s important to choose the right one for your gameroom. Consider the space you have available and the type of games you want to play. If you’re looking for a competitive edge, we recommend choosing an eight-foot table.

If you have limited space or are just starting out, a seven-foot table is a great option. And if you’re looking for the ultimate challenge, go for a nine-foot table.

Whichever size you choose, make sure to get quality billiard equipment from a reputable dealer.

What are the common sizes of billiard tables available?

The common sizes for billiard tables are 7-foot, 8-foot, and 9-foot. Each size caters to different skill levels and space requirements.

The 7-foot table is popular for home use due to its manageable size, which provides ample space for gameplay while fitting comfortably in most home game rooms. It’s versatile for various game types and is suitable for beginners.

What are the benefits of an 8-foot billiard table?

An 8-foot table is ideal for those looking to play competitively, as it is the standard size for many professional tournaments. It offers a challenging playing surface for competitive players and fits well in dedicated billiard rooms.

Who should consider purchasing a 9-foot billiard table?

A 9-foot table is best suited for seasoned players looking for a challenging gaming area. It’s typically found in billiard halls and pool rooms and requires significant space and maintenance. It’s not recommended for beginners.

A Game Room (aka billiard room) is one of the most fantastic things you can do with a spare room in your house. It’s a place where you can spend quality time with your friends or family and connect with them while having fun. It can also be a place where you can lock yourself and just rest and relax, a little utopia to recharge your batteries and get ready for the days ahead.

The truth is, a good billiard room can be anything you want it to be. And while there isn’t a good or bad way to build it, there certainly are some good practices AND things you should avoid.

Following these few rules will help you build a game room that will quickly become the most popular room in your house. Following is a list of the most important principles that will show you how to build your perfect game room. Starting with the most important one:

floorplan drawing

Pick the right room

Before you commit to buying and placing equipment, you should start with a solid plan. Draw a layout of your room. There’s nothing worse than underestimating the amount of space you need.  Poking walls with your cue and having to maneuver around spectators to get to your shot can quickly ruin the game. Generally, you need at least 5 feet (1,5 meters) around the table to freely navigate your cue around the table. Add to that at least a 7-foot table (It could be more depending on your table), and you’re looking at at least 13 feet of width.

On top of that, you might also want to consider the spectators; comfort (or lack of it) and other non-playing members of your family. Things quickly add up and get confusing, making mistakes very likely to happen. That’s why I highly recommend you to plan it all on paper. Once you’ve finished planning and preparing the room’s layout, it’s time to roll the sleeves and get to work. Out of all the technical details…

Lighting is the most important

Photography is called “painting with light.” The same concept applies to architecture and indoor design — exactly what you’re doing now! The golden hue of the sunset can add a mood to the picture and make it unique. The right lighting can have the same effect on your billiard room. If you haven’t yet decided on the style or theme you’re going after, now is the time to start thinking about it. No matter what you choose, you’ll want to focus most of the light (and attention) on the table — the star of your game room.

If you don’t know yet what your game room will look like, the Black Leather Metal Lights can be your go-to. It’s a versatile piece that looks great in any setting. If you have a nice collection of accessories you’re planning to show off (As you should!), a nice complementing wall light will do them justice. We’re making progress. Nicely illuminated, your billiard room slowly comes to life. But before you rush over to set your table, there is one more important detail to take care of.

Cover your ground

A good game room needs to be designed with heavy traffic in mind. There certainly will be food and drinks, and hard objects (like billiard balls) will occasionally hit the ground. For that reason, a solid and durable carpet might be your best option. A wall-to-wall cover will not only keep the playing area safe but also reduce the noise. Of course, if you’re a fan of hard or wooden floors, you should go for it! Just, you know, try not to drop balls too often. Now that your room is prepared, it’s time for the best part.

Choose your favorite furniture

Ideally, by now, you know the theme you’re going after, and all that’s left is to set the dream furniture in place. Customarily, the pool table takes place in the center of the room, but don’t let that rule restrain you. Feel free to offset things and create an original composition. Just remember to leave enough room so the players can maneuver comfortably around the table. Add bar or spectator chairs for the other players and spectators to sit on. You’ll obviously need a cue rack, but you don’t have to stop there. Let your imagination carry you a little. Add a dartboard cabinet in the corner or a small area for kids and other young guests to play.

Remember, this is your game room, and its main purpose is to let you spend meaningful quality time with your friends and family. And now, with all that knowledge, don’t just sit searching for another post to “learn a bit more.” Grab a piece of paper and start designing your perfect game room now!

What is the first step in planning a game room?

The first step is to pick the right room and draw a layout plan. Ensure enough space around the billiard table for free movement, considering at least 5 feet around the table and additional space for spectators and other room elements.

Why is lighting important in a game room, and how should it be arranged?

Good lighting is crucial as it sets the mood and focuses attention on key areas, particularly the billiard table. It’s important to choose lighting that complements the style or theme of the room and ensures the playing area is well-lit.

What type of flooring is recommended for a game room?

Durable carpeting is recommended for its ability to withstand heavy traffic, accidental spills, and noise reduction. However, if you prefer hard or wooden floors, that’s also an option, but be cautious with dropped objects like billiard balls.

How to Choose the Size of Your Billiard Table

When it comes to billiard tables, size definitely matters. You want to make sure you choose the right table for your space so that you can enjoy playing billiards to the fullest. In this blog post, we will discuss everything you need to know about choosing the size of your billiard table.

We will cover all the different dimensions and how to choose the right one for your needs. So, whether you are a beginner or a pro, keep reading for helpful tips on selecting the perfect billiard table size!

Room Size

One of the most important things to consider when choosing a billiard table is the size of your room. You want to make sure you have enough space around the table for players to shoot comfortably. Most first-time buyers of pool tables underestimate how much space is required. Even if the table will fit comfortably inside the room, there must be adequate room around all sides of the tables for players to shoot.

As a general rule of thumb, you should allow for at least five feet of space around the perimeter of the table. This will give players enough room to take shots without feeling cramped.

Cue Size

Another important factor to consider when choosing a billiard table is the size of your cues. Pool cues come in different sizes, so you want to make sure you choose a table that will accommodate the ones you plan to use. If you are using large-sized cues, then you will need a larger pool table. Conversely, if you are using small-sized cues, then you can get away with a smaller table.

Additional Storage Space

You may also want to consider getting a billiard table that has some additional storage space. This is especially important if you have a lot of pool accessories like extra cues, cases, and covers. Some pool tables come with built-in storage shelves or drawers, which can be very convenient. Other tables have separate furniture pieces that can be used for storage, such as cabinets, carts, and racks.

Different Sizes of Pool Tables

Now that you know some of the key factors to consider when choosing a billiard table, let’s discuss the different sizes that are available.

7ft Pool Tables

The most popular size of pool table is the seven-foot table. These tables are great for both beginner and experienced players. They are also a good choice if you have limited space in your room.

8ft Pool Tables

If you have a little more space to work with, then you may want to consider an eight-foot table. These tables are slightly larger than seven-foot tables and provide a little more room for players to shoot.

Pro Tip: If you plan on playing competitively, then we recommend getting a 9ft table. Most professional tournaments are played on this size of the table.

9ft Pool Tables

The largest size pool table is the nine-foot table. These tables are only for experienced players who have a lot of space to work with. They are not recommended for beginners due to their size.

Convertible Dining Pool Tables

If you are limited on space, then you may want to consider a convertible dining pool table. These tables can be converted from a billiard table into a dining table with the addition of a dining top. This is a great option if you want to be able to use your table for both purposes.

How to Choose the Right Size Pool Table for You

There’s no greater addition to a games room than a beautiful Billiards Table. Buying a billiard table can be such a great investment, especially if you buy one that has a timeless design, and that’s crafted from excellent quality hardwood. Not only do they add to the beautiful aesthetic to your home, but they can be a source of hours of fun with your family and friends!

Deciding on the pool table size

Deciding on the size of your pool table goes much deeper than asking whether your pool table will “́fit” into the room.  When purchasing your pool table, there’s a lot of size considerations that you need to keep in mind.

Even if a table fits seamlessly into the room, you still have to make sure that there’s adequate space for players to move and play comfortably around the pool table, without having to compromise on their game play. You also have to consider the length of the cues you want to be using, because they will also require extra space.

Another consideration when choosing your table size is whether or not you will be adding a cue rack, cabinets, or any extra storage to your room. If you are planning on purchasing a conversion top billiards table, you also have to consider whether you are adding chairs and how many places you would like when it’s functioning as a dining top.

The 7’ Pool Table

Perfect for those with very limited space. This sized table generally needs a room surface area of approximately 16 ft by 13 ft, to accommodate comfortable game play. This is generally considered as a “bar” size pool table. The table itself is typically sized 3.5’ x 7’. If you love heading down to your favorite bar and playing a few games of pool with your buddies, we would highly recommend 7’ pool table- as they are the perfect practice field for your bar game. When it comes to gameplay, this table requires a whole different skill set than the 8 or 9 foot tables. Because of the size of this table, a game of 8-ball pool can be slightly more difficult- as the playing surface is much smaller than those of the bigger tables.

Madison pool table room setting

The 8’ Pool Table

This is often referred to as the “professional” size. This is definitely the most popular size for homes and provides you with the best game play. It requires a bit more space than the 7’ table.  It’s ample room compliments 8-ball and 9-ball variants very well. This table works as a middle ground when it comes to clusters and long shots- your shots will be longer than the 7’ tables, but you will also have to break up a few clusters- which is eradicated with the 9’ table.

Game room

The 9’ Pool Table

The 9’ table is the largest of the three, thus requiring the most space. It’s also one of the best tables if you are looking for a more athletic approach to billiards. It’s fast paced, and generally used in official billiard contests. This table is the perfect table for those who are serious about their pool playing and may enter a few tournaments. The 9’ table minimises clusters, but your shots will be much longer- making the game slightly more difficult and more strategy based.

The Takeaway:

When it comes to choosing your pool table size, it’s important to keep your playing style in mind. Every table offers a  different variant of playing style, has its own advantages and disadvantages, and requires much different room settings. The first decision you have to make is whether you will have enough space (including your cue lengths!). You also have to consider the game play that these tables offer.
