A Game Room (aka billiard room) is one of the most fantastic things you can do with a spare room in your house. It’s a place where you can spend quality time with your friends or family and connect with them while having fun. It can also be a place where you can lock yourself and just rest and relax, a little utopia to recharge your batteries and get ready for the days ahead.

The truth is, a good billiard room can be anything you want it to be. And while there isn’t a good or bad way to build it, there certainly are some good practices AND things you should avoid.

Following these few rules will help you build a game room that will quickly become the most popular room in your house. Following is a list of the most important principles that will show you how to build your perfect game room. Starting with the most important one:

floorplan drawing

Pick the right room

Before you commit to buying and placing equipment, you should start with a solid plan. Draw a layout of your room. There’s nothing worse than underestimating the amount of space you need.  Poking walls with your cue and having to maneuver around spectators to get to your shot can quickly ruin the game. Generally, you need at least 5 feet (1,5 meters) around the table to freely navigate your cue around the table. Add to that at least a 7-foot table (It could be more depending on your table), and you’re looking at at least 13 feet of width.

On top of that, you might also want to consider the spectators; comfort (or lack of it) and other non-playing members of your family. Things quickly add up and get confusing, making mistakes very likely to happen. That’s why I highly recommend you to plan it all on paper. Once you’ve finished planning and preparing the room’s layout, it’s time to roll the sleeves and get to work. Out of all the technical details…

Lighting is the most important

Photography is called “painting with light.” The same concept applies to architecture and indoor design — exactly what you’re doing now! The golden hue of the sunset can add a mood to the picture and make it unique. The right lighting can have the same effect on your billiard room. If you haven’t yet decided on the style or theme you’re going after, now is the time to start thinking about it. No matter what you choose, you’ll want to focus most of the light (and attention) on the table — the star of your game room.

If you don’t know yet what your game room will look like, the Black Leather Metal Lights can be your go-to. It’s a versatile piece that looks great in any setting. If you have a nice collection of accessories you’re planning to show off (As you should!), a nice complementing wall light will do them justice. We’re making progress. Nicely illuminated, your billiard room slowly comes to life. But before you rush over to set your table, there is one more important detail to take care of.

Cover your ground

A good game room needs to be designed with heavy traffic in mind. There certainly will be food and drinks, and hard objects (like billiard balls) will occasionally hit the ground. For that reason, a solid and durable carpet might be your best option. A wall-to-wall cover will not only keep the playing area safe but also reduce the noise. Of course, if you’re a fan of hard or wooden floors, you should go for it! Just, you know, try not to drop balls too often. Now that your room is prepared, it’s time for the best part.

Choose your favorite furniture

Ideally, by now, you know the theme you’re going after, and all that’s left is to set the dream furniture in place. Customarily, the pool table takes place in the center of the room, but don’t let that rule restrain you. Feel free to offset things and create an original composition. Just remember to leave enough room so the players can maneuver comfortably around the table. Add bar or spectator chairs for the other players and spectators to sit on. You’ll obviously need a cue rack, but you don’t have to stop there. Let your imagination carry you a little. Add a dartboard cabinet in the corner or a small area for kids and other young guests to play.

Remember, this is your game room, and its main purpose is to let you spend meaningful quality time with your friends and family. And now, with all that knowledge, don’t just sit searching for another post to “learn a bit more.” Grab a piece of paper and start designing your perfect game room now!

How To Set Up a Ping Pong Table

Are you prepared to set up a ping pong table in your home? Well, before diving in, let’s go over a few essential points. In this blog post, we’ll delve into everything from selecting the perfect location and assembling various table types to acquiring the essential accessories. With our guidance, you’ll be well-equipped to set up your new table tennis table in a flash!

Pick a large enough space for the ping-pong table

Before you begin setting up your table tennis table, the first step is to decide on its placement. Opt for a level surface with enough room to accommodate the table comfortably. Make sure there’s ample clearance around it to allow players to move freely. Once you’ve identified the ideal spot, you’re all set to start the setup process.

Setting up the ping pong table

There are two main types of ping pong tables:

Collapsible Ping Pong Tables

Used for indoor table tennis, setting up and taking down these tables is a breeze. They usually feature four legs that fold in, allowing for effortless storage. Also, once collapsed, the table’s wheels facilitate easy movement. To set up a collapsible table, simply unfold the legs until they lock securely into place. Once locked, the table stands stable and is ready for use.

Ping pong Conversion Tops

Conversion table tennis tops are placed on top of an existing table, like a pool table or dining table.

Typically employed for indoor table tennis, this type of table is a common choice. To set up a conversion table tennis top, start by locating a spacious, even surface. Once you’ve identified the ideal spot, position the conversion top on the surface and fasten it securely with the provided clamps. With the table securely in place, it’s now ready for play.

Getting ready to play

Now that the table is fully assembled, it’s time to start playing! But before you can start playing, there are a few more things you need to do.

Adding the net

Most table tennis tables come with a pre-assembled net that you can easily attach to the table.

Paddles & balls

Every ping pong table usually comes with paddles and balls. If you’re looking for a specific type of paddle, or prefer better quality ping pong balls, you can purchase these separately.

Conclusion

Now that you have everything you need, it’s time to start playing table tennis! We hope this blog post has helped you learn everything you need to know about how to set up a ping pong table. If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch with us!

Ping Pong Tables for Gamerooms: The Ultimate Guide

Do you love table tennis? Do you want to bring the excitement of table tennis indoors for hours of fun family play? Presidential Billiards has the perfect table tennis table for your Gameroom. We carry a great selection of ping pong tables from some of the best brands in the business, so you can find the perfect table to fit your needs and budget.

Whether you’re looking for a regulation-size table or a sleek and simple conversion top, we have something for everyone! In this article, we’ll discuss the thing you need to consider when choosing the right ping pong table for your Gameroom. Let’s get started!

History of Table Tennis

Table tennis, also known as ping pong, has a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. It was initially conceived in England as an after-dinner parlor game for the upper class. Utilizing everyday objects such as cigar box lids for paddles and rounded corks from wine bottles for balls, the game quickly gained popularity. By the early 1900s, the first official table tennis tournaments were being held, and the sport was beginning to spread internationally. Interestingly, the name “ping pong” was originally a trademarked term by the Parker Brothers in the United States. This is why the sport is more commonly known as table tennis in competitive contexts today.

Consider Your Budget

When choosing a table tennis table, the first thing you need to consider is your budget. Ping pong tables can range in price from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars, so it’s important to set a budget before you start shopping. Once you know how much you’re willing to spend, you can narrow down your options and find the perfect table for you.

Size Matters

The next thing you need to consider is the size of the table. Regulation-size ping pong tables are nine feet long and five feet wide, but if you don’t have enough space for a regulation table, there are smaller options available. You should also take into account the height of the table. Most table tennis tables are about two and a half feet tall, but if you have small children, you may want to consider a table that’s lower to the ground.

Think About Storage

When you’re not using your ping pong table, it will need to be stored somewhere. Most table tennis tables can be folded up and stored in a closet or garage, but if you don’t have enough space for a foldable table, you may want to consider an outdoor table that can be left outside.

Material and Build Quality

When it comes to choosing a ping pong table, the material and build quality of the tabletop play crucial roles in both gameplay and longevity. There are several materials to consider:

  • Wood: Traditional wooden table tops are a popular choice due to their smooth surface and excellent bounce characteristics. High-quality wood tables, often made from plywood or MDF (medium-density fibreboard), provide consistent bounce and a great playing experience. However, wooden tables are susceptible to moisture and can warp over time if not properly cared for.
  • Composite: Composite table tops, often made from materials like resin or fiberboard with a layer of laminated coating, offer a good balance between playability and durability. These tables tend to be more resistant to warping and damage from spills, making them a practical choice for families and avid players alike.
  • Aluminium: For those who plan to keep their table tennis table outdoors or in areas with variable humidity, aluminium tables are an excellent option. These tables are highly resistant to weather-related damage and rust, ensuring longevity even in tougher conditions. While they may not offer the same bounce quality as high-end wood tables, they provide a reasonable playing experience and unparalleled durability.

Playback Mode

One feature that can significantly enhance your table tennis experience is the playback mode. Many ping-pong tables come with a playback mode that allows you to practice solo by folding up one half of the table to create a vertical backboard. This feature is incredibly useful for those who wish to improve their skills or practice without a partner. Playback mode enables players to work on their serving techniques, rally reflexes, and overall gameplay strategies. Investing in a table with playback capability ensures that you always have the option to enjoy the game, even when an opponent is not available, making it a noteworthy consideration for any enthusiast.

Wheel and Locking Mechanism

When considering a foldable ping pong table, the wheel and locking mechanism are critical features that shouldn’t be overlooked. Mobility is a significant factor, especially if you plan on storing the table when not in use. High-quality tables come equipped with large, durable wheels that make it easy to move the table from one room to another or even outdoors. This feature adds convenience and flexibility, allowing you to set up your table wherever there’s enough space to play.

Equally important is the stability provided by a robust locking mechanism. Stability ensures that the table remains perfectly level during gameplay, avoiding any disruptions caused by wobbling or unexpected movements. Locking systems on the wheels keep the table securely in place, providing a safe playing environment. When folded for storage, the locking mechanism ensures that the table remains in a compact and stable position, preventing accidental unfolding. Investing in a table with a reliable wheel and locking mechanism enhances both its usability and safety, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable table tennis experience.

Equipment & Accessories

In addition to the table itself, you’ll also need a few other things to get started:

Ping Pong Balls

You’ll need a set of table tennis balls to play. Most table tennis tables come with a set of balls, but if yours doesn’t, you can purchase a set at any sporting goods store.

Ping Pong Paddles

You’ll also need ping pong paddles. Again, most table tennis tables come with paddles, but if you’re looking for a specific type, you can purchase them online or at any sporting goods store.

Table Tennis Nets

A table tennis net is used to divide the table in half and keep the ball in play. Most table tennis tables come with a net, but if yours doesn’t, you can buy one almost anywhere.

Additional Storage Options

If you have a conversion top, the table tennis caddy is the perfect way to store all your table tennis paddles, balls, net, and other accessories.

Why a Ping Pong Table will be a Great Addition to your Gameroom

Adding a ping pong table to your game room brings a multitude of benefits that go beyond just having fun. Socially, table tennis is a fantastic way to bring family and friends together. It’s a game that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels, making it ideal for family gatherings, parties, and friendly competitions. The interactive nature of the game encourages communication and bonding, building stronger relationships among players.

Physically, table tennis is an excellent form of exercise. It enhances hand-eye coordination, sharpens reflexes, and provides a good cardiovascular workout without being overly strenuous. Playing regularly can help improve balance, agility, and overall fitness, making it a great alternative to more intense physical activities.

Mentally, engaging in a game of table tennis stimulates the brain. The fast-paced nature of the game requires quick thinking and strategic planning, improving cognitive functions such as focus and concentration. Studies have shown that playing table tennis can even aid in the prevention of cognitive decline in older adults, making it a valuable addition to any household.

Tips for Maintaining and Cleaning Your Ping Pong Table

Ensuring your ping pong table remains in top condition requires regular maintenance and proper cleaning. Here are some essential tips to help extend the lifespan of your table and keep it performing at its best:

Regular Cleaning

  1. Dusting the Surface: Dust can accumulate on the table surface and affect gameplay. Use a soft, dry cloth to gently dust the surface regularly.
  2. Wiping Spills Immediately: In the event of spills, promptly wipe the area with a damp cloth and then dry it completely to prevent moisture damage.
  3. Deep Cleaning: Periodically, clean the table with a mild cleaning solution. Mix a small amount of mild dish soap with water and use a soft cloth to wipe down the surface, ensuring you remove any residues. Dry the table thoroughly afterwards.

Protecting the Table

  1. Use a Table Cover: When the table is not in use, cover it with a fitted ping pong table cover to protect it from dust, spills, and potential damage from sunlight.
  2. Indoor Storage: If you have an indoor table, ensure it is stored in a dry, climate-controlled environment to prevent warping and other moisture-related issues.
  3. Outdoor Storage for Aluminium Tables: Aluminium tables can withstand outdoor conditions better, but it’s still advisable to use a cover and store them in a sheltered area when not in use.

Maintaining the Net and Accessories

  1. Net Care: Check the net regularly for any tears or sagging. A sagging net can be tightened using the tension adjuster, if available. Clean it periodically to keep it free from dust and debris.
  2. Inspecting the Paddles and Balls: Regularly inspect your paddles for wear and tear, and replace them if necessary. Ensure the balls are not cracked or damaged, as this can affect gameplay.

Periodic Inspections

  1. Check the Frame and Legs: Inspect the table frame and legs for any signs of rust, loose screws, or damage. Tighten any loose components and address rust spots promptly to prevent them from spreading.
  2. Evaluate the Playing Surface: Look for any scratches or dents in the playing surface. Minor scratches can be gently sanded and repainted if necessary.
